In a frightening moment on Tuesday night, a 70-year-old taxi driver suddenly fainted while traveling through a cross-harbor tunnel which scared a female passenger into pressing the brakes and stopping the vehicle in time.

Police received a report at around 9 pm yesterday that a female taxi passenger claimed that the driver suddenly fell unconscious while driving, and the car was parked in the Eastern Harbor Crossing Tunnel.

The passenger said the driver seemed to feel uncomfortable suddenly and fell unconscious before she slammed on the taxi's brakes and called the police.

According to surveillance camera footage in the tunnel, the taxi drove forward for a few seconds before the passenger stopped it.

This is the eighth taxi accident recorded this year involving drivers aged above 70 years old.

When responding to another accident early this month, in which a taxi driven by an 84-year-old driver crashed into five people, transport chief Lam Sai-hung said the government was planning to review the requirements for physical fitness certification of driving license applicants/holders.
